Dantés hebt ihn nach dem Tode des Abbé und seiner Flucht aus der Festung und nennt sich fortan Graf von Monte Christo. Ihn treibt nur noch ein einziges Ziel an: Die Rache an seinen Peinigern, die mittlerweile reich und angesehen geworden sind. Im Gegensatz zum echten Vorbild läßt Alexandre Dumas seinen Helden sehr viel subtiler vorgehen. Der Graf alias Edmond Dantès gewinnt die Gunst seiner Erzfeinde und macht sie so von sich abhängig. Er kämpft mit Worten und scheinbar guten Taten und zieht so die Schlinge immer weiter zu.
